Food Studies
This is a subject where many of our pupils truly shine.
Food Studies is a core subject at Meadows from ages 7 to 16, with opportunities to continue in Sixth Form. In our refurbished teaching kitchen, pupils learn practical cooking, food preparation, storage and hygiene skills, helping them develop independence and prepare for everyday life.
Our Barista Programme, supported by the Savoy Educational Trust, takes this learning into the workplace. Students apply and interview for roles in our school café, where they prepare drinks, serve staff and governors as customers and work as a team. Alongside practical barista skills, they develop communication, confidence and an understanding of running a small business. Links with local cafés also provide opportunities for work experience beyond school.
Students work towards qualifications in Home Cooking Skills, catering, barista skills and food safety. In 2025–26, 24 of the 26 students who entered achieved Home Cooking Skills qualifications at Level 1 or 2, and all four Sixth Form students achieved Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene. The programme supports progression into college, further training and employment.
It also builds confidence, independence and creativity – as seen during Careers Week, when students of different ages worked with a visiting head chef and produced dishes of genuine restaurant quality.

“I had the pleasure of demonstrating how to prepare and cook a chicken dish with the students and Azzo last year.
The students were brilliant and made my day a joy. The kitchen was clean, organised and well-equipped, allowing all the students to have a go and demonstrate to me the food they love to cook with the ingredients provided. It was a brilliant day, one I wouldn’t hesitate to do again.
Lovely mature students, great environment, and treated to some brilliant coffee! ”
