The session included a recap of key phonics principles, with staff practising chunking and sound buttoning to support early reading development. Using the Read Write Inc. Speed Sounds Chart, colleagues explored how children build confidence in decoding unfamiliar words and develop their reading fluency.

To gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by learners, staff were also asked to tackle unusually spelt words themselves, giving them first-hand experience of what it can feel like to be a pupil learning to read.
